THE UNIVERSITY OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND WELCOMES STUDENTS FROM
MORE THAN 50 COUNTRIES ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

More than 4,000 students from 50 countries and every region of Canada now attend UPEI. Although the historic core of the
campus proudly traces its roots back to 1804, most facilities have been newly constructed or recently expanded and renovated
during a period of unprecedented development over the last five years.

The UPEI Advantage!

UPEI has once again moved up in the annual Maclean's rankings of Canada’s 21 primarily undergraduate universities. This
builds on an upward trend that has seen UPEI climb steadily from 18th position in 2000 to the 8th position it has held during
the past two years. Now it ranks number five in Canada.

Highly Ranked

The annual Maclean's rankings released this week place UPEI number one in the country for awards per full time faculty, fourth
for the number of classes taught by tenured faculty and fourth for the number of students winning awards.

"Our increasingly positive results reflect our commitment to providing students with an exceptional educational experience at
UPEI," says Vice President of Academic Development Dr. Vianne Timmons. "The number five overall ranking also speaks to improvements and enhanced performance in all aspects of what we do at UPEI."

A Leader in Research

UPEI has also become a leader in research that is recognized by partners and funding bodies regionally, nationally and
internationally. Research and development is one of the university's fastest-growing areas of specialty, and in 2010, Research Infosource ranked UPEI first in the country among undergraduate universities for both Research Income Growth and Research
Intensity Growth over ten years (1999 to 2009). UPEI experienced a 432% increase in external research funding in the last decade. In 2010, our University was the proud recipient of a Canada Excellence Research Chair, one of only 17 CERC’s awarded to Canadian universities through a highly competitive process.

Study in a Spectacular Setting

Prince Edward Island is a beautiful place in which to live and study. Located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence on Canada’s east coast, PEI has a temperate climate and is famous for its green fields, red sandstone cliffs and the blue horizons of water meeting sky. In the fall, the leaves change colours, lighting up the landscape with vivid reds and golds. In the winter, temperatures drop below zero and UPEI students can cross-country ski throughout the province's beautiful network of nature trails. Summer brings sun and gentle breezes, and pleasant temperatures in the mid-20s. Prince Edward Island's sandy shores are nestled just across from the provinces of New Brunswick and northern Nova Scotia. They are accessible by plane, by ferry, and by the Confederation Bridge, which is the world's longest bridge covering winter-frozen waters.

Many Study Pathways to Shape Your Future

UPEI offers approximately 90 programs in six different faculties. You can specialize in courses from the classic liberal arts and sciences, including a new pre-veterinary stream, or can choose to study within our School of Business, School of Nursing or Faculty of Education. Another option is our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, one of only five veterinary studies programs in Canada. Our Atlantic Veterinary College offers DVM, Master of Science, Master of Veterinary Science, PhD and post-diploma degrees and programs. It presents impressive research opportunities for graduate students. More than 8% of our total student body is engaged in graduate studies. Masters programs in business, biology, chemistry, Island studies, education and Nursing are also available at UPEI. Some UPEI programs offer Co-operative Education options, allowing you the opportunity to work in Canada or abroad in your chosen field, while studying and receiving credit.

Take Advantage of Employment Opportunities

Will you be a full-time international student at the University of Prince Edward Island, and have a valid study permit? If so, you are eligible to take advantage of employment opportunities right on campus from your time of arrival. After six months, you are free to seek employment off-campus as well.

If you wish to stay in Canada upon graduation, you are encouraged to obtain a work permit through Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit program. This program offers graduates a valid working visa for up to three years post-graduation, and can be an excellent stepping-stone to establishing a long-term career or life in Canada.
